Frostfox had to bite his tail to keep from laughing at Hawkpaw. A plan began to form in his mind. He looked around, wondering where Deathclaw had gotten to. "Deathclaw? Where are you?"

Hawkpaw carefully went to the bottom of the Sky Oak. He then buried the squirrel. Hawkpaw saw a thrush in a beach tree. It was not very high, so Hawkpaw jumped. His outstretched claws struck home, and the thrush fell to the ground. After burying yet another piece of prey, he caught sight of a rabbit. Stalking it slowly, Hawkpaw snuck up on it. He pounced. He had caught a rabbit, but it looked a little different then the ones he had seen before. It was HUGE! The rabbit was almost twice Hawkpaw's size. After digging a giant hole and burying the rabbit, Hawkpaw moved on.

Frostfox stalked his apprentice, silently sliding through the shadows of the forest. He was deeply impressed by Hawkpaw's catches. Watching the young tom look for more prey, Frostfox decided to surprise him and see how Hawkpaw handled a surprise attack. The undergrowth rustled as Frostfox bolted out of the bushes and pounced on his apprentice's back.

Taken by surprise, Hawkpaw was bowled over by Frostfox. A sparrow gave a shriek of alarm and flew away. "I was too intent on my prey that I didn't notice you." mewed Hawkpaw with a hint of laughter in his voice. Hawkpaw rolled onto is back and kicked Frostfox in the belly, claws sheathed.

Frostfox's eyes twinkled with laughter. "You were doing a great job, but even though you're stalking prey, you should still try to keep your senses open to the forest around you."

"Got it!" replied Hawkpaw. Hawkpaw pricked his ears. He thought he heard something. When heried listening, however, he could not hear it anymore. Hawkpaw could not determine what the sound was, or where it was coming from.

Hawkpaw nodded. Suddenly he heard it again. It was closer, and Hawkpaw could tell it was coming from the west. It sounded a bit like claws scratching against something. Hawkpaw looked at his mentor. He had many questions going on in his head.

"Crouch low and be prepared for anything," Frostfox whispered to Hawkpaw. "Be ready to attack, and be ready to be attacked. Don't unsheathe your claws unless it's necessary."

"Got it!" mewed Hawkpaw. He did as his mentor instructed and crouched down low. He prepared himself for anything, and he made sure he kept his claws sheathed.

"Make sure you have as little weight as possible on your paws, just in case you need to spring." Frostfox continued to look all around. "I don't hear it anymore... I wonder what it was."

Opening his mouth slightly, Frostfox tasted the air. "No, I don't think it's dogs. The smell is so familiarly threatening though..." With a jolt, Frostfox realized what it was. "Great StarClan! Hawkpaw, I think it's a fox! I don't know why I didn't recognize it before..."
